Equine Dental Mirrors & Drenching Syringe

Two instruments that decide how much of the mouth you can actually work on: one to see into it, one to clear it. Velmourne's equine dental mirrors and drenching syringes are built for the caudal arcades — where the light does not reach and debris collects out of sight.

Mirrors

A horse's mouth is deep, dark and narrow at the back. Without a mirror you are working the caudal arcades by feel and inference. Head size is the decision: a larger head shows you more at once, a smaller head reaches places a larger one cannot.

  • Equine Dental Mirror, 50mm — the broadest field of view, with a T-handle that stays comfortable to hold at full reach. The general-purpose choice for arcade examination.
  • Equine Dental Mirror, Small Head — 40mm inclined head on a stainless handle, for narrower spaces where the 50mm will not sit at the angle you need.
  • Equine Dental Mirror, Multi Head — 20mm and 30mm interchangeable heads on one inclined handle, changed over with a screw mechanism. The cross-hatched handle holds grip when wet. If you want one mirror that covers most situations, this is it.

Drenching Syringes

Flushing clears debris during and after treatment — after extraction, out of a diastema you have just picked, or simply to see what you are looking at. Capacity matters, but how the syringe is operated matters more.

One hand or two?

This is the choice worth making deliberately:

  • One-handed (300ml) — pump operated, so your other hand stays free for the speculum, the mirror, or the horse. If you often work single-handed, this is the one you will actually reach for.
  • Two-handed (400ml and 600ml) — pull-push action, which generates more pressure and shifts packed material a one-handed pump will not. Holds more, so you flush repeatedly without refilling.
  • Drenching Syringe, 300ml — single-handed pump operation with a large stainless nozzle for reach. Piston position adjusts with a screw adjuster at the back.
  • Drenching Syringe, 400ml — two-handed pull-push with markings on the cylinder, and an aluminium shaft fitting for a secure join. The middle ground: more pressure than the 300ml, less bulk than the 600ml.
  • Drenching Syringe, 600ml — the largest capacity, for extensive flushing without stopping to refill. Also available in multi-syringe sets.

Choosing

Most practices end up with a 50mm mirror and a 400ml syringe as the working default — enough view and enough pressure for routine work. Add the multi-head mirror when caudal examination becomes routine, and the 300ml if you frequently work without an assistant. The 600ml earns its place in clinics doing longer procedures where refilling interrupts the work.

Mirrors are made in stainless steel throughout. Syringes use hard-wearing bodies with stainless nozzles, built for repeated use rather than replacement. There is no minimum order — buy one instrument or fit out a practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mirror head size should I choose?

50mm for general arcade examination — it shows you the most at once. Smaller heads for narrow spaces and awkward angles. The multi-head covers both, since the heads swap over.

What is the difference between the 300ml and the larger syringes?

Operation, not just capacity. The 300ml is pump operated with one hand, leaving your other hand free. The 400ml and 600ml use a two-handed pull-push action that generates more pressure.

Which capacity do I need?

300ml for quick, targeted flushes; 400ml for routine work; 600ml where you are flushing extensively and do not want to stop and refill.

Can the syringes be reused?

Yes. They are built for repeated professional use — cleaned and sterilised between horses in the normal way.

Are multi-syringe sets available?

Yes. Set options are available on the 600ml product page, which is more economical than buying each capacity separately.

How should mirrors be cleaned?

Clean after each use and sterilise as normal, but avoid abrasive cleaning — the reflective surface scratches, and a scratched mirror gives you less than a clean small one.

Are equine mirrors different from small animal mirrors?

Considerably. Equine mirrors have much longer handles to reach the caudal arcades, and larger heads to show a useful field of view in a much bigger mouth.

Are these suitable for mobile practice?

Yes — both mirrors and syringes are built for field conditions. The cross-hatched and T-handles are designed specifically to hold grip when wet.
