Equine Dental Kits

Buying a kit is the sensible way to start. The instruments are matched to each other, the wallet or case is included, and you are not left discovering three months in that you never bought the one float you actually needed. Velmourne's equine dental kits run from a starter float set through to a full working outfit.

Which Kit?

The choice comes down to two questions: are you buying floats only, or a complete working setup — and if floats, which shaft do you prefer?

Float kits — floats and storage only

  • Basic Equine Dental Float Rasp Kit — the entry point. Essential hand floats for routine maintenance, for practitioners starting out or mobile services handling straightforward work.
  • Pony Dental Float Kit — proportioned for ponies and small horses. Lightweight, with a rubber-dotted ergonomic handle that keeps grip when wet, and made in non-magnetic stainless steel. If your caseload is mostly small breeds, start here rather than adapting a full-size kit.
  • Complete Classic Round Shaft Float Kit — the full round-shaft range in one purchase: SH0 small incisor, SH1 premolar and molar, SH2 premolar, SH3 offset for lower arcade, SH4 straight shaft lingual and buccal, SH5 straight shaft for cheek teeth. Every region of the mouth covered.
  • Complete Flat Shaft Float Kit — the same coverage in flat shaft. A flat shaft cannot roll in the hand, so the head holds its angle through the stroke — a preference, not a hierarchy.

Complete kits — everything for a working setup

  • Equine Dental Kit (Basic) — a compact, curated set for routine examination and basic floating. Light enough to carry, complete enough to work from.
  • Equine Dental Kit (Complete) — the full working outfit. Includes an SE speculum with PVC-coated straps, SH1 premolar and molar float, SH2 premolar float, Float 26 upturned back molar float, a waterproof float wallet, a 400 ml dental syringe, a 50 mm dental mirror, and a premium 12 litre stainless bucket with brush.

If you are equipping from scratch, the Complete kit saves the most — it covers examination, floating and flushing in one purchase, and buying those items individually costs considerably more.

Blades Are Not Supplied

No kit includes blades. Blades are sourced separately. This applies to every float and every kit in the range — please budget for them alongside your order.

Round Shaft or Flat Shaft?

If you are choosing between the two complete float kits, this is the only decision that matters:

  • Round shaft — the traditional profile. Turns in the hand, which suits practitioners who adjust the angle mid-stroke without regripping.
  • Flat shaft — cannot rotate under load, so the head stays where you set it. Clearer directional feedback, particularly when the head is out of sight.

Most practitioners know within a day which one suits them. If you already own floats, buy the matching shaft — a consistent feel across a set is worth more than mixing.

Why Dental Work Matters

A horse's teeth erupt continuously and wear unevenly. Sharp enamel points, hooks and uneven molar tables interfere with chewing, bit contact and condition long before anyone notices a problem. Routine attention every six to twelve months supports:

  • Efficient chewing and better forage utilisation
  • Proper bit contact and rideability
  • Reduced risk of colic linked to poorly chewed forage
  • Weight and body condition held through the winter

Kits or Individual Instruments?

A kit is more economical when you are equipping from scratch, and everything in it is matched for compatibility and storage. Individual instruments make sense once you are established — replacing a worn float, or adding a specific pattern to a setup you already own. Both are available; there is no minimum order.

Every instrument carrying the Velmourne name is stainless steel and is checked before dispatch. Kits are supplied in their case or wallet, ready for the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are blades included in the kits?

No. We do not supply blades with any float or kit. They will need to be sourced separately.

What do I need to start floating horses?

At minimum: a set of hand floats covering the different angles, a speculum, and a way of supporting the horse's head. The Basic Float Rasp Kit covers the floats; the Equine Dental Kit (Complete) covers floats, speculum, mirror and syringe in one purchase.

Which kit should an experienced practitioner buy?

The Equine Dental Kit (Complete) if you want a full working outfit, or one of the two complete float kits if you already own a speculum and the rest and only need the floats.

What is the difference between the two complete float kits?

The shaft. One is classic round shaft, the other flat shaft. The head patterns and coverage are the same.

Do you have a kit for ponies?

Yes. The Pony Dental Float Kit is proportioned for ponies and small horses rather than being a shortened full-size kit, and is lighter to hold at the balance point during rasping.

What is the difference between a float and a rasp?

In practice the terms are used interchangeably. Strictly, the float is the instrument — handle and head — and the rasp is the abrasive working surface it carries.

Are the kits suitable for field use?

Yes. Kits are supplied in a wallet or case, and the stainless steel construction handles yard conditions and repeated cleaning.

Can I buy individual instruments instead of a kit?

Yes — every instrument in the kits is available separately, for replacement or for building a setup around what you already own.

Do you ship outside the UK?

Yes — we despatch worldwide from Leicester. Shipping is calculated at checkout.
